Cocktails & Chaos, Scharrels & Schuim

On Tuesday the 22nd of March, 40 second year students gathered at Scharrels & Schuim for Second Years Day. The Scharrels & Schuim bartenders were so kind as to give us a cocktail workshop! Very useful, as many students know no better than to chug away litres of beer (“pinten”). Before we could start we had to wait for some girls who were lost (of course), making the organisers of the IntAct Committee not so happy.

You could make the mojito as strong as you wanted (...)

The first cocktail we made was the classic mojito. A mojito is made of rum, sugar, lime juice, a little sparkling water, ice and some mint. The trick is to slap the mint on your hand once, to free the taste (some of us must have misunderstood, as they hit their neighbours on the head instead). You could make the mojito as strong as you wanted (…).

The second cocktail was the cosmopolitan. For a cosmopolitan you need vodka (Estimator’s favourite cocktail already!), triple sec, crushed ice, cranberry syrup and some lime juice. The bartender taught us how to properly shake the drink, but unfortunately many of us failed dramatically. A cosmopolitan is served in a martini glass (but don’t make the mistake of calling it a type of martini!) and garnished with a twist of orange peel.

Many of us were in the mood for some real "pinten"

For those who thought the drinking wasn’t going fast enough, the third drink was a shot: the Bob Marley. Bob Marley is a layered shot of grenadine syrup, rum and melon liqueur. The preparation requires very careful pouring the drinks in the glasses, but if done well can yield amazing-looking results (see photos).

We ended with ‘make your own cocktail’. Personally, I just took some random nice-looking bottles and mixed with them, which was definitely in the top 3 worst ideas of the evening (when taking a sip it wasn’t so bad at first, but then the aftertaste would hit you). Others were more successful and produced some quite drinkable creations.

After those four cocktails, many of us were in the mood for some real “pinten” and continued the night in Club BED. Thanks IntAct, Second Years Day was great!
