Econometrics & Beyond: much more than a birthday party

2016 marks an important date for the Econometric Institute and FAECTOR who are celebrating their 12th and 10th lustrum respectively this year (that is, their 60th and 50th anniversary for all non-Dutchies)! What’s the best way to celebrate these birthdays? For Prof. dr. Franses, the answer is clear: invite current and former colleagues and students to celebrate, connect, and share ideas about econometrics, operations research and much more. FAECTOR, in cooperation with the Erasmus School of Economics, has organised a vivid conference for exactly this purpose. Join us on May 27th and be prepared to gain deep insights into econometric theory, applications of operations research and informatics, and success stories of econometricians who have used their expertise to create thriving businesses.

The heart of the conference are three parallel sessions, each focused on a particular topic. In the session on ‘Instrumental Variables and Score Driven Models’, students have the opportunity to learn more about the current state of research on econometric theory. More specifically: to learn about solutions (and their limitations) to issues arising from weak identification of two step estimation methods, and an application to the analysis of oil shocks and their effect on the US economy. In the second part of the session, insights into a newly developed class of time series models – Score Driven Models – will be provided by researchers of the VU Amsterdam and Maastricht University.

The session on ‘Operations Research, Informatics and Beyond’ provides students with interesting applications in a diverse set of fields. After a discussion of inventory control, the first part of the session is concluded by an illustration of OR techniques in optimising flood safety in the Netherlands. The second part continues with exciting topics, treating the trade-off between radiation therapy quality and efficiency, advanced bibliometric methods used to analyse meta-data of scientific publications, and last, a closer look into airline revenue management and control.

During the session ‘Entrepreneurship in Econometrics’, the founders and co-founders of Charta Software, Jedlix, NEWCRAFT, Veneficus, and ORTEC share their business ideas and provide students with insights into the development of a business. In particular focus is also the role of the skills and knowledge the speakers gained through studying econometrics here in Rotterdam.

So what can you expect from ‘Econometrics and Beyond’? Expect to be moved and engaged by the findings and experiences of those who have stood in your shoes ones, and who now shape the world of academia and business in the Netherlands and the rest of the world.

Got excited? You might be lucky, a few student-spots are still left. Sign up here!
